Since the 19th century, the two-floor old rural building known as the “barchessa” has been home to part of the old Leonardi vinegar barrels. Still today, it symbolizes the family tradition and history of ageing exceptional balsamic vinegar of Modena.
On the ground floor of the barchessa are the large barrels known as “badesse” (“abbesses”) and the huge barrels called “madri” (mothers), where the cooked grape must begins to ferment, before being transferred into a series of progressively smaller barrels upstairs.
Some charming stone stairs on the outside of the building lead to the attic of the barchessa. It contains some of the centenary barrels that provide the “Extra Vecchio” (“Extra Old”) PDO Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena its vintage fragrances and flavours.
Every room of the old vinegar farm has an evocative atmosphere and offers different sensations based on the season or time of visit.
